I am Alistair and along with my wife Myra have been gardening in Aberdeen for forty years. I started this website to profile the plants which we have grown in this part of the country. Living in what some see as the frozen north I take pleasure in showing what can be achieved. (Go to my A to Z of our plants) clicking on the plant picture of your choice will take you to where I describe how this plant performed in our garden.
Also if you click on the link (Our Garden) you will see a full size picture slideshow of our front and back garden. Thanks for stopping by and any comment you leave will be answered.
Hi
Can you recommend a supplier of the red Flamboyant Begonia.
I use to grow them years ago but I lost my stock over winter and I am finding difficulty in sourcing the proper variety.
I ordered some last year but the plants have long ivy shaped leaves and not the red vibrant colour of the ones I had previously.
Please can you help
Charles Orr
Charles take a look at my recent post on Flamboyant and you will pick up the name of a supplier. http://www.aberdeengardening.co.uk/diary/index.php/2011/07/begonia-flamboyant-2/
While doodling on the web I came upon your link where you were enquiring about where you could obtain flambouant begonias (july 2011),well I have been growing them for many years. I now have some tubers which are surpless to what I require for the coming year which I was thinking of putting in my local paper for 50p each. If you are still looking for some I would be able to let you have some at that price plus whatever it costs me to send them to you. Please use email above (brian.thulborn@talktalk.net)
Hi Brian, I actually gave away 200 of these tubers last year, but some of my readers may be interested.
I have only just seen this message, and realise it’s too late for this year. We have got the same problem- lost our stock 2 years ago in the winter and can’t now find the correct replacement, like your pictures. I bought some from J. Parker Bulbs in 2011 called Flamboyant and they turned out to have vary dark leaves and large dark red flowers with fairly long stalks. 2012 we sent for some from Baytree Nurseries at Spalding, again it said flamboyant begonia on the packaging and they are very upright plants with a similar looking flower but on a fairly long stalk, and the plant is not spreading within the pots like the ones in your pictures. Also the leaves are much bigger. Can you help me to locate some flamboyants as seen in your pictures please. Look forward to hearing from you. Marion Farrow
Hi Marion, If you had contacted me last year I could have sent you dozens of the tubers as I was bogged down with them. Here is the link to my post where I talk a little of flamboyents http://www.aberdeengardening.co.uk/diary/index.php/2011/07/begonia-flamboyant-2/ Look for the link to Ben Reids they normally have them in stock every February, I think they would send them out to you.
