Rhododendrons with their glossy evergreen leaves give invaluable structure to the winter garden. They come knee high to fifteen feet tall. Fantastic range of colours, deep red through to the palest pinks, white , yellow, purples. Some flowering in the winter, others from March till June.

The earliest one to flower, probably more well known for this rather than the quality of the blooms is Nobleanum. In some areas this one flowers as early as December. Rhodies will only flower if the soil is acid. In fact the plant will not survive too long otherwise. A good idea is to dig in plenty of ericacious compost when planting. and top dress with this every year. The more dwarf varieties do pretty well in containers, remember to use the correct compost.
