Tuesday February 21st

In spite of winter reminders of sleety showers, the days more and more are showing signs of spring. The sunshine in the garden is beginning to have a hint of warmth, the days are getting longer, the birds singing in the early morning are starting to wake us, the spring flowering bulbs are now well through, buds are now starting to swell on the Rhibes and other shrubs. Snowdrops have now been in flower for several weeks, and winter flowering Iris are also in full bloom. The same happens every year, yet always it feels brand new, yes I love all that the seasons offer, but spring has that little bit more. Today in between the showers I decided to cut back a Silver Birch which has become very large, and planted maybe just a little too close to the house. However my work was not allowed to be given the full treatment as another gardener in the houshold would not allow such foolishness. Mind you a fair bit was removed, also tidied up the climbing rose which grows through the tree. Host plants like clematis growing through certain shrubs I am quite happy with, roses through trees unless dead ones I have yet to be convinced.
