Camellias Donation and Debbie
When living in Aberdeen many optimistic gardeners like myself would have a go at at growing Camellias in our gardens. It was generally met with failure owing to the cold Winters and cool Spring temperatures.
That is until I found out that the Wiliamsii form was hardier than the Japonicas. Further research indicated that Donation was the hardiest of all.
Finding out this stuff was not so easy back in the day before the internet and Google. We are all genesis’s nowadays.
Well, anyway I got myself Donation Williamsii, planted it in a sheltered spot, lo and behold it survived and flowered, it didn’t exactly thrive but it wasn’t bad.
The first two pictures in what I now call my mini posts is of Donation thriving in our Fife garden, 90 miles south of Aberdeen. The blooms started opening in late February and continued flowering until the end of April.
The two pictures below ore of our Williamsii Camellia Debbie. Flowering period the same as Donation. I think most of us would see Debbie as having more perfectly formed blooms than Donation.
We have several other forms of Japonica which also do well in our Fife garden.
Do you have Camellias in your Aberdeen garden, I would love to know.
Actually. looking back, I find that I did find a spot in our Aberdeen garden where Donation did indeed thrive.
